Travel Funding

The School of Marine Science and Ocean Engineering offers two different Travel Support Programs.

The SMSOE Travel Support Program is intended to provide partial travel support to present the results of marine related research at regional, national and international meetings or to attend professional development workshops

The Graduate Recruitment Travel Support Program is intended to provide UNH faculty members with travel assistance to bring potential graduate students whose research is marine-focused to visit the UNH campus during the recruitment process.

SMSOE Travel Support Program

The School of Marine Science and Ocean Engineering (SMSOE) Travel Support Program provides partial funding for travel to:

  • Present marine-related research at regional, national, or international conferences
  • Attend professional development workshops

Eligibility:
Support is available to all current and active UNH faculty, graduate students, and staff involved in marine-related research with strong preference given to graduate students.

Funding & Deadlines

  • Funding Available: $3,000 per quarter
  • Application Deadlines: First Monday of each quarter (January, April, July, October)
  • Award Announcements: Second Monday of each quarter (or Tuesday if Monday is a holiday)

Selection Process

  • If total requests exceed available funds, graduate students receive priority.
  • Remaining applications will be selected at random.
  • If your request is not funded in one quarter, you may reapply in future quarters as long as you remain eligible and submit before your proposed travel.

The maximum travel support provided is half of the cost of travel (air fare, ground transportation) and/or the registration fee for one meeting per person per academic year, not to exceed $600. The program does not support living expenses (hotel, meals) associated with travel.

  • Applicants must complete the below application and submit with an abstract of your presentation and copies of their travel and registration receipts. If airline tickets have not been purchased yet, please submit a screen shot of your intended itinerary.
  • Graduate students must also submit a letter of recommendation from their advisor. This letter of recommendation can be sent directly to marine.information@unh.edu or submitted with the application below
  • Requests for professional development support should include registration information, a brief description of the workshop, and reason for attending.
  • Support for assistance can be requested any time during the year.
  • Requests for assistance will not be accepted after the trip is complete.

  • Because funding is limited, the program will award no more than one travel request per individual per academic year (fall to summer).
  • Due to the level of competition for travel/education funds, we are unable to support travel to conferences (i.e., AGU, Ocean Sciences, etc.) by individuals who are not presenting papers/posters.
  • Please note that USNH policy has a 45-day post-travel limit on reimbursement. Funds not expended within 45 days following the event will be returned to the program to be used for future funding.

  • Support for assistance can be requested any time during the year.
  • Requests for assistance will not be accepted after the trip is complete.

  • The program will consider no more than one travel request per faculty member per academic year.

  • Program funding is limited to $10,000 per year and is awarded on a first come, first served basis.

  • Does not cover accommodations, meals, tolls, tips, etc.

Air travel: The faculty member or candidate can make the travel arrangements and be reimbursed for this expense via UNH’s travel reimbursement processes. Alternatively, if flight information is available a SMSOE staff member can make the flight arrangements on behalf of the traveler.

Grand transportation: Any ground transportation expenses would be handled via UNH’s travel reimbursement processes.

Faculty members are expected to provide SMSOE with the results of this travel (whether or not the visit resulted in admission to a UNH graduate program.)
