Small Boat Program

jackson estaurine laboratory

The Marine School's small  boats are available for research activities only and include outboard-powered vessels ranging from a 12-foot skiff to a 22-foot center-console. The Eastern, Nebi, and Spartina are berthed at the Jackson Estuarine Laboratory located in Durham, NH. Boating facilities at Jackson Estuarine Laboratory include a pier with a 2 ton capacity crane and a floating dock with slip spaces for seven boats.

The Galen J and Red Cloud are berthed at the UNH Pier located in the Judd Gregg Marine Research Complex in New Castle, NH. The marine research pier is a 325-foot pier with fixed and floating docks which provides essential berth space for the UNH fleet as well as for NOAA's hydrographic research vessel, the Ferdinand R. Hassler. The Pier is outfitted with a 5-ton capacity crane.

All vessels must be operated by a certified operator.  (Reference Small Boat Program Manual - Section 2.50) Proof of certification is required. Certification can be obtained from any NASBLA-certified boaters safety course. A certified boat operator can be provided at an additional fee. For trips where it is required, SMSOE can provide a USCG-licensed captain. Contact Nate Rennels for details.

See below for vessel specifications, fees, and request to use the vessels. Some vessels are available on a bareboat charter basis to external users with the proper agreements and insurance in place. Contact Nate Rennels for details.

All users are required to read and acknowledge the Small Boat Program Manual.

Please use the links below to request a boat. Before making your request, please check the small boat calendar for availability. The fees listed below are for UNH internal users only. Additional fees will apply for external users. Fees listed below are as of July 1, 2022. Fees are reviewed annually and new rates are posted on or about July 1 each year.
