Environmental microbiology and toxicology

Research Emphasis

My main focuses of research are: 1) Escherichia coli ribotyping to identify sources of fecal contamination in surface waters; 2) microbial cycling of mercury in estuarine and marine environments;3) impacts of toxic chemicals in the marine environment;4) stormwater-related pollution of estuarine waters. I have many different projects that make up my research program, the majority of which are related to these 4 topic areas.

Some of my new research areas are:

  • using DGGE to analyze bacterial communities in natural environments (oysters, depurated and undepurated)
  • field evaluation of a stormwater treatment technology for removal of bacterial contaminants
  • evaluating the microbial and nutrient composition and fate of effluent from municipal wastewater treatment facilities
  • using Enterococcus spp. ribotyping for pollution source tracking in recreational marine waters
  • DNA sequence analysis of E.coli
  • RNA DNA for application to pollution source tracking
