My research interests emphasize the functional role and ecology of macrophytic marine plants (seaweeds) in nearshore coastal habitats. Recent projects have involved synoptic surveys (censuses) of seaweed populations in diverse open coastal and estuarine habitats such as the Great Bay Estuarine System, environmental studies dealing with human impacts on marine resources, the physiological ecology and population genetics of seaweeds, and enhanced utilization and cultivation of seaweeds. Several research projects also have focused on interpretive autecological investigations of seaweed populations, particularly economically significant species. I have a strong interest in introduced seaweeds, including their origins, dates of introduction, vectors, present distributions and potential impacts.
