Undergraduate Studies in Marine Science
About the Marine Program
Are you asking, why UNH? What is it about the University of New Hampshire that makes it the place that I want to go for my undergraduate studies in Marine Science? What distinguishes UNH from other institutions that I could attend? The answers have to do with great faculty, teaching and research excellence, 'hands-on' research and experiential learning opportunities, connection to real-world problems, and more...
Our Programs blend the best characteristics of a small New England college with a major research university through faculty who excel in both the classroom and the laboratory. With expertise ranging from lobster physiology and offshore structure engineering, to hydrothermal vent geochemistry, bio-optical oceanography, fisheries ecology and coastal ocean mapping, our faculty bring a wealth of experience and a problem solving mentality to their classes.
Student research opportunities abound as a result of numerous Faculty research programs. Publications arising from this research has resulted in UNH being the only university in the country to be ranked in the top-five in citation impact in both the Geosciences and Ecology/Environmental Sciences in the most recent assessment of 'High-Impact U.S. Universities' by ISI - Research Services Group.
The Marine Program vessel fleet and numerous laboratories (e.g. the Jackson Estuarine Laboratory and the Coastal Marine Laboratory) are all within 15 miles of the main campus in Durham. This combination of facilities provides students with all of the attributes of university life along with easy access to laboratory and field sites for formal classes, independent research, work-study opportunities and informal educational opportunities. Formal affiliations with the Shoals Marine Laboratory and the Sea Education Association further expand educational opportunities for UNH undergraduates interested in the marine environment.
We encourage you to look deeper into the diverse programs and opportunities that UNH offers on this web site. We think that you will find that UNH has a lot to offer and might be the right fit for you!
