Undergraduate Studies in Marine Science
Off-Campus Programs
Shoals Marine Laboratory Summer Program
The University of New Hampshire, in cooperation with Cornell University, offers a summer field program in marine sciences on Appledore Island of the Isles of Shoals. Undergraduate courses introduce students to a broad array of marine sciences, including oceanography, marine biology, fisheries, and marine resources. Introduction to Field Marine Science (ZOOL 474), a three-week, 4-credit course, is offered every other summer at the Shoals Marine Lab. It has no prerequisites and satisfies the general education requirement in the biological sciences. The four-week, 8-credit general courses, Field Marine Science (ZOOL 674) and Field Marine Ecology (ZOOL 675), are offered in June and August, respectively, each summer. They draw upon the backgrounds of numerous faculty and others associated with marine science and fisheries. There are daily lectures and work in laboratory and field. The courses are graded on a letter- grade basis; at least one full year of college biology or the equivalent is a prerequisite. All SML courses may be taken for Honors credit by UNH students with a minimum 3.2 GPA. Other credit courses are offered in marine botany, invertebrate zoology, experimental ecology, ornithology, animal behavior, fish ecology, coastal ecology and bioclimatology, wetlands, marine vertebrates, coastal policy, underwater research, and biological illustration. Undergraduate research for credit is an option where students carry out part or all of an independent project at Shoals under the guidance of Shoals faculty. Shoals offers generous financial aid to UNH students outside of the normal UNH financial aid packages. The Sea Education Association (SEA)
The Sea Education Association (SEA) in Woods Hole, MA provides undergraduates with an opportunity to participate in an experiential sail training and oceanography program known as the SEA Semester. The program combines intensive research in the areas of oceanography, maritime studies, and nautical science with hands-on experience aboard a traditional sailing ship. Piloting, celestial navigation, and practical seamanship are learned together with oceanographic sampling techniques and marine laboratory procedures. Critical thinking, problem-solving, team-building and leadership skills are emphasized throughout the program. SEA Semester is appropriate for students in marine biology, geology and physical science, environmental studies, American studies, and most other areas within the liberal arts and sciences. If students complete the UNH Center for International Education (CIE) eligibility and registration process, students can use their financial aid package to offset SEA costs, and SEA has a generous scholarship program. Academic credit for SEA can be transferred to UNH as the following courses: ESCI 501, Introduction to Oceanography 4 cr, ZOOL 760, Practical Oceanography 7 cr, HIST 595, Maritime History 3 cr, and INCO 501, Nautical Science 3 cr.
