Undergraduate Studies in Marine Science
Marine and Freshwater Biology Curriculum
Marine and Freshwater Biology students must complete 8 courses, in addition to the Biology Core Curriculum courses, in order to fulfill the requirements of this option. All students MUST take General Limnology (PBIO 717/ZOOL 717) or Field Limnology (PBIO 719/ZOOL 719). Three more of the required 8 courses must come from the MFB Core list below and 4 must come from the Electives list. Although the Electives are listed by category, students are not required to take a certain number of courses from each category. Other Elective courses can be substituted with permission of a student’s advisor. MFB Core Courses (3 are required)
- Animal Physiology (ZOOL 625) or Plant Physiology (PBIO 701)
- Cell and Developmental Biology (BIOL 605)
- Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy (ZOOL 518) or Marine Invertebrates (ZOOL 628)
- Oceanography (ESCI 501)
- Introduction to Marine Biology (ZOOL 503) or Field Marine Science* (ZOOL674 BIOSM 364/ZOOL 674)
* Field Marine Science is a six-credit summer course taught at the Isles of Shoals. For those who elect to take ZOOL 674 we suggest that you request enrollment in the course as early as possible; preferably in the summer before the sophomore or junior years.
