Shoals Marine Laboratory - Dedicated to Undergraduate Education in Marine Sciences

Policy and protocol for requesting UNH Honors designation for Shoals Marine Laboratory courses
Approved 10/24/07

The Shoals Marine Laboratory (SML) is an academic partnership between UNH and Cornell University. SML faculty and students come from many different academic institutions. All SML courses carry Cornell course numbers; many are also approved and accredited by UNH, and have UNH course numbers. SML courses are not currently certified by UNH’s General Education Committee or Discovery Program as fulfilling UNH GenEd or Discovery requirements. SML courses may be used towards Honors In Major requirements by UNH students with a gpa of at least 3.2, with the permission of their home departments.

For SML courses that have UNH course numbers and are taught by UNH faculty, standard Honors designation procedures should be followed; the SML Associate Director need not be involved. For SML courses that do not have UNH numbers or are taught by non-UNH faculty, an alternative procedure is described below.

To request UNH Honors designation for a SML course, the student must:

1. Meet with the SML Associate Director at UNH (Dr. Jessica Bolker; jbolker@cisunix.unh.edu).

2. Develop a written proposal (or “honors contract”) describing how Honors requirements will be met through activities associated with the SML course. Suggestions and criteria for Honors designation are described at Designating a Course as Honors.

3. Secure the approval of the SML Associate Director and the appropriate Departmental Honors Liaison (see listing).

4. Complete and submit the Honors Designation Form to the Registrar. The SML Associate Director will sign in lieu of non-UNH instructors. Please note: this should be done in advance of your stay on the island, as getting paperwork to the Registrar’s office will not be possible after you arrive!
