Visiting Scholar for the Center for Molecular and Comparative Endocrinology

The Center for Molecular and Comparative Endocrinology is proud to be hosting visiting scholar, Jaruwan “Pui” Poljaroen, a Ph.D. student in microbiology at Mahidol University in Bankok, Thailand. Ms. Ponjareon is continuing her work on the purification and identification of a GnRH‐like peptide in freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergi, using sephadex HPLC chromatography determined by a specific technical procedure called radioimmunoassay. The identified peaks will be recognized by a high-powered technology called Mass Spectrometry. In addition to working closely with Stacia Sower and members of her lab, Ms. Poljaroen is extending the Center’s collaborative efforts through work with Feixia Chu of the Hubbard Center for Genome Studies by utilizing their Mass Spectrometry facilities.

Several undergraduate students worked this summer on unique projects associated with the Coastal Response Research Center. Here is what one such student is doing:

David Gaylord ‘10
I am working on a project that will integrate local expertise into the Environmental Response Management Application developed by the Coastal Response Research Center.  The project will involve assembling local expert users of the ocean for an interactive mapping workshop in early 2010.  My work on the project so far has dealt primarily with identifying ocean experts and exploring a similar effort being conducted off the coast of California.
