Stacia Sower, director of the Center for Molecular and Comparative Endocrinology, and her team are well into her 29th lamprey season here at UNH. Despite colder-than-normal temperatures and an entirely new group of students and staff members, Stacia has collected over 200 lamprey from the Cocheco and Exeter Rivers and managed 7 separate experiments aimed to examine brain and pituitary hormones and receptors during reproduction. “We were able to get up and running so quickly this year thanks to Dr. Sower’s experience, planning and careful documentation,” says Allisan Aquilina-Beck, research scientist for the center and relative newcomer to lamprey collection and sampling. “ It’s amazing what this new group has been able to accomplish in such short order.”
In addition to lamprey season’s time-sensitive nature (the result of the lamprey’s once-per-lifetime spawning and subsequent death) and the extensive effort that the experiments require, Stacia and her team have also made time to present findings at conferences and symposia across the globe. In June Stacia was invited to speak at the International Congress of Comparative Endocrinology in Hong Kong and Allisan and Mihael Freamat, former post doc in Stacia's lab, presented their work at the annual Endocrinology meetings in Washington, D.C.

Several undergraduate students are working this summer on unique projects associated with the Coastal Response Research Center. This is what they are doing:
Joseph W. Corsello, ‘11 I am working on the UNH contribution to the JIP project; examining the role of protistan predation on biodegradation of oil in brine channels that occur in Arctic sea ice. For this project, I setup and maintain experiment reactors, and collect and analyze samples for parameters including temperature, salinity, organic carbon content, and abundance of bacteria and protists using fluorescence microscopy.
Luke Douglas, ‘10
This summer I have been researching water born asphalt spills. The initial part of the research involved compiling information on asphalt spills that have occurred in the past. This information was obtained from contacting companies and organizations involved in the transportation and storage of hot asphalt. In the second part of the research I will conduct test on the behavior of asphalt spilt in water over a number of variations in temperature and salinity. |

End of an Era...... "It was the kind of day you dream of in July in the Gulf of Maine - a bad dream that is - with November-like cold, rain, and a milk shake of E winds, seas and swells. But the latest lineup of the COOA crew, Shawn Shellito, Chris Hunt, Sean Berry, and Amanda Hyde performed valiantly to collect the last drops of water in the 62 month/5 year Wilkinson Basin time series."
