Overview

The UNH Marine Program includes a number of cooperative institutes and academic and research centers of excellence that support the marine science education, research and outreach missions of the university. Collectively, these centers and institutes typify the partnership activities and entrepreneurial approach to solving real world problems that are core elements of marine science at UNH.

Academically, the Centers for Marine Biology (CMB), Ocean Engineering (COE) & Ocean Science (COS) provide an administrative framework for bringing together faculty and students from numerous departments on campus into three areas of strength in marine sciences at UNH. Each of these Centers has a senior faculty member that serves as its Director and is able to assist students interested in undergraduate and graduate studies in marine science and ocean engineering.

The University of New Hampshire has also established a significant number of collaborative centers of excellence and cooperative research institutes with NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. In order of inceptions, these partnerships include: the New Hampshire Sea Grant Program, the Cooperative Institute for Coastal and Estuarine Environmental Technology (CICEET), the Center for Coastal Ocean Mapping/Joint Hydrographic Center (CCOM/JHC), the Cooperative Institute of New England Mariculture and Fisheries/Open Ocean Aquaculture Demonstration Project CINEMar/OOA, the Northeast Consortium, and the UNH Center for Excellence in Coastal Ocean Observation and Analysis (COOA). These UNH/NOAA partnerships provide vital support and focus to programs in applied marine science and public education, estuarine and coastal research, coastal ocean mapping and hydrography, marine fisheries and aquaculture, cooperative fisheries research and coastal ocean observing and other areas of marine science.

Additional research centers that contribute significantly to the Marine Program include the Ocean Process Analysis Laboratory (OPAL) in the Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans and Space (EOS), the Hubbard Center for Genome Studies (HCGS) and the Environmental Research Group.
