Joint Hydrographic Center

The Center for Coastal Ocean Mapping (CCOM) and the Joint Hydrographic Center (JHC) were established at UNH in 1999 in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Together, CCOM and JHC have helped establish UNH as an international leader in the field of coastal hydrography and advanced coastal ocean mapping, and created numerous opportunities for interdisciplinary faculty partnerships and student research.

CCOM, a UNH Center for Excellence, is directed by Dr. Larry Mayer (Professor of Earth Sciences and Ocean Engineering) and is the home to a number of faculty and research scientists. With core support from NOAA, CCOM researchers also carry out basic and applied research through funding from numerous federal agencies and private partners.

The Joint Hydrographic Center is a cooperative partnership between UNH and NOAA that is co-directed by Dr. Mayer and Captain Andrew Armstrong (NOAA, retired). The JHC and CCOM are focused on attracting and educating the next generation of coastal hydrographers and are one of the few programs that have achieved Category A Recognition by the International Federation of Surveyors/International Hydrographic Organization (FIG/IHO) Advisory Board on Standards of Competence for Hydrographic Surveyors.

Jointly, CCOM and JHC currently support 7 Marine Science Graduate Fellowships within the Marine Program for exceptional students undertaking graduate research in coastal hydrography. For more information on CCOM and JHC, follow the link on the top of this page to the CCOM/JHC home page.
