Marine Immersion at the Shoals Marine Laboratory
An intensive 2-credit course for incoming freshmen, surveying a range of marine-related fields (with emphasis on biology and ecology), research approaches, and organisms. Marine Immersion will introduce students to the breadth, excitement and challenges of marine science through lectures, demonstrations, and field experience offered by a cohort of UNH faculty and through short research projects carried out at the Shoals Marine Laboratory on Appledore Island.
This course is based at the world class Shoals Marine Laboratory on Appledore Island where students and some faculty will be in residence. Operated jointly by UNH and Cornell University, the island is located 10 miles off the coast of New Hampshire and is equipped with modern dormitory, dining and research facilties.
The Marine Immersion course is a eight day program offered in August of each year. The 2014 dates are August 11-18.
$2,130 - In-state (NH students)
$2,214 - Out-of-state (Non-New Hampshire students)
Fee includes tuition, fees, registration, room, board and transportation between Portmouth, NH and the Shoals Marine Laboratory. Scholarship information.
Who can apply
The Marine Immersion course accepts up to 16 incoming UNH freshmen and transfer students from any major, but especially biology, zoology and marine, estuarine and freshwater biology. It is not open to high school students or those from other institutions.
How to apply
Students interested in applying to this course should first contact Dr. Jessica Bolker for permission. Students will then sign up for MEFB 410 through UNH Summer Session. Payment is due at time of registration.
