R/V Coastal Surveyor
The R/V Coastal Surveyor is a 40-foot research vessel designed specifically for coastal multibeam hydrography. Operated mostly in the waters off Portsmouth, New Hampshire, it is capable of transiting and operating from Maine to Massachusetts. Though not intended for the R/V Coastal Surveyor docks at the UNH pier located at the Judd Gregg Marine Research Complex in Newcastle, NH offshore operations, the vessel is ideally suited to near-shore and shallow water.
In addition to laboratory space, its features include a robust, motor-driven ram system that provides an ideal mount for a range of multibeam and other sonar systems. It also incorporates an active-roll stabilization feature to limit vessel motions detrimental to multibeam operations. The vessel has become a vital tool for the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping/Joint Hydrographic Center (CCOM/JHC), which has operated her since 2001, and remains one of the finest shallow-water survey vessels in the world.
