Earth Sciences

Overview

The Department of Earth Sciences offers the master of science degree in earth sciences with several options (focuses), including oceanography and ocean mapping.  The oceanography option is for students interested in chemical, geological or physical oceanography, while the ocean mapping option is for students interested in hydrography and hydrographic survey technology.  Graduate students in the department may conduct research through UNH’s Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space and the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping.

Degree Options

Students in the thesis option must complete 30 credits, which include credits accumulated in the core curriculum for their area.  They must also complete a 6-credit master’s thesis and present their result orally.  Students in the non-thesis option must complete 34 credits, including the core curriculum, a 2-credit directed research project, and a written and oral presentation of that research.
